FABRIC STRUCTURES STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION: THE WINNERS ARE…
Three projects, three design talents, three new frontiers of design and use of materials: the Fabric Structures Association (FSA), division of the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI), recently announced the winners of the "2018 Fabric Structures Student Design Competition", competition with a high rate of experimentation. Rafael Dias Simoes, Kevin Barthelmebs and Fabien Burgeat deserved the highest step of the podium with "Origami Parking", a temporary garage with wooden structure, that houses 450-500 cars, located near Orly airport (France), urban area in constant modification thanks to a new railway station and the extension of the metropolitan line.
Second place to Georges Fares of the University of Texas in Austin, whose project "Cortina Hostel" was born from the idea of transforming a mall into a hotel using origami-folded pyramids attached to a system of rods and connected through a track in the ceiling. A techno-futuristic solution that allows you to create a curtain system and transform the hotel space into single beds or multiple combined spaces, according to the user's request.
Bronze medal, finally, to Kellie Nguyen and her BEACON Pavilion, whose goal is to support SURE Walk (a volunteer program for students with the aim to reducing the risk of sexual violence and other forms of interpersonal violence on the university campus of Austin, providing companionship to people walking home during the night) providing a secure and well-lit special area near the student center.
