JEAN NOUVEL IN DOHA: NMoQ
The new single work of Jean Nouvel, deus ex machina of the NMoQ / National Museum of Qatar in Doha, officially opened on March 28.
The museum is located around the Fariq Al Salatah Palace, residence and seat of the government, built by the late Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al-Thani. The palace, renovated in 1975 in a prominent position in the south of Doha, with its ring plan that recalls the setting of the caravanserai (the traditional closed place used to stop the caravans that crossed the desert) composed of an intersection of pavilions surrounding a large courtyard and the palace, will be the first monument seen by travelers from the airport. "An incredible work, in which materials and lines live in perfect harmony. This is confirmed by the plans of the pavilions; the external walls and the roofs are made up of discs that intersect evoking a desert rose. However, the use of materials is surprising, "comments Roberto Rescia, CEO of CoverHat.
All the 'discs' of the Museum are in fact reinforced concrete panels, covered in sand-colored glass fiber, with variable inclination and diameter.
To fill the gaps between one disk and the other, there are glass facades of evident lightness. A constant fil rouge that also lives in the interiors, composed of interlocking discs, sand-colored polished concrete floors and walls covered in stuc-Pierre, plaster that imitates the stone. The structure is contextualized in a park characterized by scarce local vegetation, inspired by the desert landscape, by a garden with indigenous aromatic plants and an artificial lagoon.
