SEEN IN THE WORLD: A COVERING THAT “DEFENDS” THE COURTYARD OF THE CASTLE
Originally headquarters of one of the provinces of the Teutonic Order founded in 1190, the Grand Commandery Alden Biesen (Belgium) is today a cultural center of the Flemish Community that attracts not only congressmen, thanks to the special area dedicated to meetings, but also tourists. The need to create spaces-comfort in the courtyard of the Castle has led to the development of 4 umbrellas which, built without touching the historic building, have been placed on a central pillar at a height of about 10 m, and slightly overlapping to protect completely the space from the rain. Rainwater is evacuated through the pillars. The goal of the engineers Ney & Partners was to create a cover adaptable to the yard on a seasonal basis so as to ensure maximum operability. The material used, polyester with PVC coating, creates a very interesting color game. The translucency of the fabric, allows daylight to filter lightly through the texture when the umbrellas are open, while when they are closed, it appears completely white.
