FAQ - General

  • Are building permits required for the installation of CoverHat airdome?

Airdomes are construction systems that each nation has included in their building regulations in a proper way. The possibility of being used as a seasonal or permanent solution makes the airdome a system that must meet the requirements of the place of installation.

  • Are there any limits for the use of the airdome?

no, the airdome can be used to cover areas dedicated to sports, for construction sites, warehouses or production plants.

  • How does an airdome work?

The airdome is formed by a membrane shell bound to the ground, a ventilation unit that maintains an overpressure of the internal volume at a higher value than the external atmospheric pressure and by inlet systems with pressure compensation system.

  • How long will the average life of a CoverHat airdome be?

The technical literature and real experience teach that the average life of an airdome is around 20 years.

  • Is it better an airdome or a permanent structure with a membrane cover?

It is very difficult to build a reliable comparison that establishes the prevalence of one or the other solution; when the dimensions are small, for example for an 18 x 36 m tennis court, an income statement based on the average life of an airdome can provide information for a reliable comparison. For larger structures, the comparison must be further implemented and a much more careful analysis is required, strictly correlated to the needs of the uses. CoverHat staff can help the client to evaluate the specific case.

  • Is it correct to compare an airdome to a glulam structure with a membrane cover?

If the term of comparison is the energy performance of the envelope, it is correct. The thermal performance of the membrane used in single, double or other membrane system with insulating material, are assimilable both in the airdome and in the supported structures.

  • Is the airdome a temporary cover only or can it be used permanently?

The airdome born as a temporary covering solution, but in some countries it is used for permanent uses thanks its resistance characteristics, the possibility of covering large spans without intermediate structures and the relatively low price.
